Never have I been prouder to be an American.
America is a funny place; we are not a rational people, we act
on emotion, we're gullible, and we frequently think of ourselves as
being much much better than we actually are. That being said, we are a
people who genuinely want to do good in the world. However misguided
our efforts may be, however deceptive and manipulative Americans in
power may be, as a people, we act in good faith. We believe what we do
is right, even if it isn't, and we use our wobbly moral compass as our
guide.America is a nation built on inefficiency, and I mean that literally. Our constitution is set up so that it is pretty damn hard to actually accomplish anything. It takes large majorities to pass laws, and the laws have to pass the test of the three branches of our government before they take effect. It is an absolute miracle that we are able to accomplish anything at all. The genius of the system that we have is in the inefficency. Let's face it--if you come across a bear in the woods, you want him to be following a path and climbing over branches and rocks. You want to be able to see where he is going and you want it to take him a long time to get there, so that you can be sure that you are not in his way. You don't want to meet him in an open field where he is unrestrained and hungry, because he is much faster than you and much stronger than you and he is going to ruin your day. Our constitution serves as the rocks and branches that restrain the bear. As long as we stick to the constitution, we may not make as much progress as we could, but we are certainly not going to maul a bunch of innocents. The most shameful times in my country's history, present day very much included, are when someone for some reason decides that the constitution is a hindrance and not a virtue.
In spite of all of this, I come back to the genuine good will of the American people. We're not stupid; a little slow to figure things out sometimes, but not stupid. We know what a mistake it was to elect George W. Bush as president, and because of that, his party lost a national election in a landslide that hasn't been seen since 1984 when Ronald Reagan crushed Walter Mondale. Our good nature has led us to pass civil rights legislation, it has motivated us to have the most liberal immigration laws on the planet. The United States, for all of our ugliness and irrationality, has been in the course of history, a force for good in the world.
Reads the poem by Emma Lazarus, inscribed on a plaque inside the base of the Statue of Liberty (thank you for that, France. I sincerely believe no one in the world understands the power of symbolism like the French). Our power as a nation is built on the refuse of the world; the people that no one else wants. Come, we tell them, work hard, and America is yours, because America is OURS. We have been this way since our inception. Have we always lived up to this ideal in the best way possible? Of course not. Everything we do involves stumbling and falling and taking wrong turns, making mistakes, correcting them, and making them again. But always we have made progress in the end, and always we strive to do so.
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

Now, after over 200 years, America leads the way again. We have regressed shamefully the last eight years, blinded by emotion. But we have woken up and decided that the way we have been going is not the way we want to go. We have elected, to the highest office in the land, a man who represents by his very existence the power of the American ideal that I so treasure. Barack Hussein Obama is the son of a poor Kenyan and a poor white woman, raised by his grandparents, a mixed race man with a Swahili first and last name and a Muslim middle name, a man who isn't black, who isn't white, who was neither the ancestor of slaves nor the ancestor of slave owners, a man who 200 years ago would have been shunned in every society on the planet, the very same wretched refuse of Lazarus's poem. If he is not a true American, than no such thing exists. And now, this man, in the most unlikely of situations, is the leader of the free world. Finally, the West has a leader who is not an old white guy (giving credit where credit is due; European countries have been electing female leaders for decades, something that American is woefully behind the curve on). Finally, the face of America is not a white face. And the simple fact that the most powerful western country is no longer led by a white person gives me hope that maybe the world can begin to heal. And maybe, after years of throwing the world into conflict, American can lead the world out of the darkness we helped create and into a new world that is better than we could have imagined.photo credits:

Lord have mercy upon us ! This election is not historical because a socialist enters the White House (again). It’s because the President-elect is Afro-American. This nation is not as united as you believe. I am actually very scared. Imagine BO gets assassinated! It will bring our country an unprecedented havoc. Civil rights riots will look like a peachy ride to grandma’s house. America does not face glorious times, it will get much worth. Prepare yourself and say a prayer.
Indeed, Obama's election has cast a vast ray of inspiration on a global scale. I agree that American's are an awkward people, with genuinely good intentions who are not stupid. Yet, many an American is still very prone to ignorance and to give blind credence to religious/moral "leaders". The same night Obama was elected, three critical mass states, Florida, Arizona and California voted to ban same-sex marriages (in the case of California--these rights were actually taken away from the citizens), raising the toll to 30 states that now deny marriage equality. Many posit that the increased African-American vote (a group much opposed to marriage equality) and funding from "religious" organizations (viz. the Mormon Church in Utah) led to these bans. Is social progress mutually exclusive among minorities? Yes, the country made a giant leap forward in terms of racial equality, but on the same night, it further entrenched itself in fear-based, religious-oriented discrimination toward its LGBT citizens. As an American, my pride still swells for this historic event, but the reality-check provided by the regression in civil rights for LGBT Americans has been profoundly felt.

As a non-American, I think this piece sums up accurately the overwhelming mood in the United States and abroad following the election of Barack Obama. We are inspired by the progression of the first African-American to the White House, excited about the unique perspective he will bring to this most important position and the potential for racial reconciliation, and relieved that the dark years of the Bush administration are over. Undeniably, this is an historic moment.
But, what else is it? That’s it. That’s just it. And that’s the problem. For too long we have heard too much about who Obama is and what he represents and too little about what he would actually do once in power. I searched throughout the primaries and the election campaign for evidence of this man’s policy agenda. I read articles and reviews, I listened to speeches, I talked to supporters. I found but one enduring conviction: protectionism. Yes he seems to be on target in dealing with the financial crisis, yes he will bring the American debacle in Iraq to a close. But these seem to be merely transient ideas susceptible to amendment on the basis of popular opinion, as seen in his recent admission that troops will be brought home from Iraq when convenient. His one enduring trait seems to be a belief in increased economic protection as the solution to America’s economic woes. This is quite frankly worrying.
Now, it is quite possible that his opacity was a deliberate election strategy designed to prevent alienation of large groups of voters. It is possible that in power he will pursue an open market strategy based on an understanding that increasing barriers to trade will only worsen the effects of the current crisis. But if this is not correct, President Obama could take such drastic action as rolling back NAFTA and destroying any chances of reviving the beleaguered DOHA world trade talks. Future policies with respect to the Middle East and Iranian enrichment remain anyone’s guess.
Don’t get me wrong. I believe Obama is a highly intelligent capable man. He was by far the best candidate in the election campaign (although possibly not the primaries). I am inspired, excited and relieved. But I am also anxious to know what ‘change’ really means when it’s in the White House. Will the Democrats pay the price for bucking Hillary, their tried and tested war horse, for a smooth talking populist? Only time will tell.

Talk to Ralph Nader. But lets talk just a little bit about Barack's "socialism." Under Barack Obama, I hope to be able to go to the doctor when I get sick. I don't know where you're from, Gall, but this is supposed to be a European website, and I'm pretty sure most Europeans can go to the doctor when they get sick. I'm an American, and a relatively poor one, so going to the doctor is an expensive luxury I can't afford. If the end of a third-world health care system in a developed nation is Socialism, then comrade, sign me up.

As we have a long, brutal, and painful history of political assasination, we do not need to be reminded, and I find it pretty offensive that that is the first place you go. You are 100% correct, and it is one of the most frustrating things about being an American (actually about being a member of the human race)--every time we move forward a few steps, we also move backwards a few. It would be nice if society moved forward at an even pace, but history simply doesn't work that way. The regression in rights that occured in Florida, Arizona, and California is disturbing and shows that there is still much more work to be done; still it is not a reason that we should not celebrate the tremendous steps forward that have been made. As an American, I pledge to do whatever I can to advance the cause of equality in all areas.

I am not a proud American because the president-elect is black, either, and I agree that would be ridiculous. What I am proud of is the fact that the president-elect isn't white. If it sounds like I am being glib, I'm not. The difference is critical to understanding the reason the pride is justified. I have nothing against old white guys; I hope to be one myself some day. The reason it is significant and worthy of pride is that we finally elected a president who is a man who happens to be black, not a black man. The color of his skin was not a reason to vote for him, but for the first time, it wasn't a reason NOT to vote for him.
Your characterization of John McCain is generous to say the least. To say he fought for his country for 35 years requires a leap of faith I am not ready to make. No one is denying the sacrifice of 5 yrs in a POW camp. What I am denying is the years he wasn't in that camp, the years as a youth he spent living in the Washington cocktail circuit, and the years he spent after as the favorite son of a state he'd never lived in, to say that this is fighting for his country is a bit of a stretch. How many POW's ended up homeless on the street after Vietnam? How many of those people had an admiral for a father?
